Catherine Synnott

Catherine Studied at the Crawford School of Art and Design until 1993 and has won prizes for ceramics and for etching. She has worked as an Artist in Residence in France and is a member of the Artists' association of Ireland and the National Sculpture Factory, Cork. She is a founder member of Bridge Street Studios. She has exhibited widely in Cork, Dublin and abroad.

Catherine's main inspiration comes from the sea and places of tidal change. A simple form is integral to her use of texture and painterly mark making. Natural oxides enhance her markings into the clay, allowing for subtle tonal hues.

" Water, River, Sea and Boat form a constant source of inspiration. Places of tidal change where the forces of water etch into the landscape interest me; as I am drawn to coastal areas, rivers and the local Navvy bank in Dundalk."

These simple forms have a still, silent presence, a meditative Zen- like quality achieved by subtle modulations and rhythms, the shapes echo traditional vessel forms and sometimes draw on their cupped, enclosing qualities for their artistic effect. But there is also the registration of change and transformation in the surfaces reminiscent of the changes wrought by wind, water and weather.
