Seán Ó Flaithearta

Seán Ó Flaithearta was born on Oileain Árainn, 1964. He has studied at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin and received scholarships to study abroad at the Pennsylvania School of Arts, USA and the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts de la Cambre, Brussels.

He has received awards from the Arts Council of Ireland, Galway Arts Office - Co. Council, a study award from the Belgian Ministry for Education and French Culture, scholarships and repeated sponsorship from Údarás na Gaeltachta.

Ó Flaithearta's work has been exhibited widely. Solo exhibitions to date include: 2005 "Deora Sáile" Áras Éinna, Inis Oírr, Co. Galway; 2001 "Cosán Dearg", Áras Éinna, Inis Oírr Co. Galway; 1999 "Ex-Voto", Signal Arts Centre, Bray, Co. Wicklow; 1997 "Ex-Voto" Midlands Arts Centre, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath; 1995 "Coisceim na Trocaire", Bridge Mills Gallery, Galway and An Culturlann, Falls Rd Belfast; "Teacht go Barr Uisce", a touring exhibition to each of the Aran Islands; "Scadan Caoch", Ionad Árainn, 1993; "Duan", Craigavon, N. Ó Flaithearta lives and works in Connemara where he has his studio. His work is concerned with the cultural beliefs which underlie human behaviour and the social, political and spiritual aspects of the human condition. His work will relate to those issues that address the human situation, be it in a rural or an urban landscape, or whether it be in the past or present.
