Patrick O'Mahony
Patrick O'Mahony was born in London of Irish parents and was educated at Holland Park, Kinsington where he first developed an interest in art. Since leaving college in 1968 his interest in drawing and painting has continued.Being largely self-taught he has experimented with different mediums, for primitive charcoal through watercolours, acrylics and oils.
Relocating from England in 1999 he now works from a rural location on the Galway Roscommon border. He is currently working and experimenting in mediums of oil pastels;
"Unlike oil paints, acrylics, watercolours or gouache, they can't be mixed effectively prior to application to paper or board. The paper on which the finished work appears becomes the artist's palette. The applied texture of the pastel and the texture of the paper are as important to the finished work as colour and design".
Frequent themes in his work are skyscapes, seascapes, woodlands and the inspiring features of the Galway countryside, particularly the ancient oakwoods of Rosmoylan, near Creggs, and its surrounding lakes. Much of this present work is the result of recurrent visits to this area and to the region of Carrick-on-Suir, and the coastlines of Waterford and Cork where he spent his childhood summers.
