Doreen Sheridan Dolly
Living near Roadstone Quarry at Two Mile Ditch, Castlegar, Galway, Doreen would occasionally go for long walks there on Sunday afternoons.
The vast size and space filled her with wonder and excitement. Reverberations of pre human life emanated from the layers of rugged rock on the cliff faces. Nature in her generosity laid out an infinite source of building material for modern man like a bountiful picnic.
"This is the nucleus from which Galway city and its infrastructure has grown at the end of the second millennium.
What was rock, scrub and apparently waste land fifty years ago is now being mined and used to build our lovely city and develop the roads of our country.
My [quarry] paintings and prints are my response to the lavishness of nature and man's genius in using it responsibly.
I dedicate these works to the labour and industry of the men and women who have worked there and in all the quarries of Ireland."
