Ag Dul Siar (Into The West)

Exhibition of Pastels
by Kieran Tobin
26th April - 28th May 1998

View Exhibition.

"Into the West" is Kieran Tobin's first solo exhibition in his hometown of Galway. Looking for a hobby a few years ago, Kieran began reading magazines about painting and became interested in various techniques. Since then, he has become completely 'hooked'!

Kieran is a self-taught painter. Starting with watercolours, he moved to acrylic and then to his preferred medium of pastel.

Landscape is Kieran's interest and "Into the West" is made up of paintings of the Connemara landscape. Kieran feels that Connemara is his second home, and he loves to paint it. He loves the solitude he can find there and the fact that he can get away to a place where he can be completely on his own. Kieran's inspiration comes from exploring the length and breath of Connemara and the exhibition features some of his old favourite haunts - Roundstone, Maam and Ballinahinch.

"Into the West" provides us with a glimpse of Kieran's own personal Connemara. There is wonderful variety in this exhibition. Kieran has painted the sea, the lakes and the waterfalls of Connemara. He has shown us the mountains, the hills, the woodlands and the bogs through his eyes.

From Oughterard west to Clifden and South to Roundstone, Kieran has captured Connemara in many of its moods. From misty 'soft' days to vivid sunshine highlighting Autumn colours, these paintings demonstrate a sensitivity to the changing light of a beautiful environment.

Kieran, a surgeon in Galway, has previously had shows in Bray and taken part in a number of group exhibitions in the Kenny Galleries in Galway and Spiddal.

Seo é an chéad taispeántas aonaránach leis an ealaíontóir seo san timpleacht in a bhfuil sé ag cónaí. Bhí suim aige le blianta fada i gcúrsaí ealaíona, agus roinnt blianta ó shoin, cheannaigh sé cúpla irisleabhair faoi an péintéireacht. Theastaigh uaidh a fháil amach cén chaoi ar éirigh le péintéirí teacht ar na tréithe ar leith in a gcuid pictiúirí, an an toradh agus an chríochnúlacht. De réir a chéile, mhealladh é, agus thosnaigh sé ag baint triail as an ealaíontóireacht é féin. Thosnaigh sé le uiscedathanna, ansin aicrilic, agus anois déanann sé a chuid saothar ar fad tré mheán pastal.

D'fhoghlaim sé cén chaoi breathnú ar an dtimpleacht, ar na radharcanna tíre in aice leis. Bhain sé an-taithneamh as an bpróiséis seo, ag taisteal tré Chonamara ag breathnú ar an solas ar shíor ag athrú, na dathanna éagsúla, an draíocht ar leith a bhaineann leis an gceanntair. Músclaíodh é. D'oscail a shúile agus spreagadh é chun péintéireacht.

Taispeánann an bailiúchán seo dúinn an chaoi ar léigh sé Conamara agus an éirí croí a fuair sé ann. Is é seo a fhreagra pearsanta don áilleacht agus an iargúltacht.

Is máinlia i nGaillimh é Ciarán. Bhí taispeántas aige i gCondae Cill Mhantáin, agus ghlac sé páirt i roinnt taispeántaisí ghrúpa eile.
